Nestled at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is a part of the sacred Char Dham Yatra of the Himalayas and is the abode of one of Lord Vishnu’s incarnations. The idol of Lord Badrinarayan sits in a meditative posture, represented by a 3.3 ft. tall black stone idol under a canopy of pure gold. What makes this idol unique is its seated meditative position, unlike the usual reclining pose of Lord Vishnu. The temple also houses 15 other deities that are worshipped with great reverence. Below the temple lies Tapt Kund, a natural medicinal hot spring.
As a sacred site, Badrinath can be traced back to the Vedic Age around 1500 BC. The establishment of Badrinath Mandir is widely credited to Adi Shankaracharya, the great Hindu philosopher who revived the temple in the 8th century. He discovered a black fossilized idol of Lord Vishnu in the Alaknanda River, which is considered one of the eight self-manifested idols of Lord Vishnu (Svayam Vyakta Kshetras), not created by human hands.
Some historical evidence suggests that Badrinath Temple once existed as a Buddhist monastery, owing to its architectural style and vibrant exterior. Regardless of its past, Badrinath Dham remains one of India's most significant religious destinations, drawing devotees from across the country who seek the darshan of the deity. The temple remains closed during winter, and Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated here with great enthusiasm.
